Stonehenge

Distance to St. James: 8 milesThis squat Stonehenge — a little bit of Druid Europe in sweltering south-central Missouri — was built at the former University of Missouri at Rolla Rock Mechanics and Explosives Research Center to showcase the stone carving capabilities of its High Pressure Water Jet Lab. “In ancient times, carving these stones would have taken years,” a plaque explains. “These stones were carved in a month.”

Experimental Mine

Distance to St. James: 8 milesThis limestone mine was founded in 1921. It is used for research, rescue practice, study of mining practices and other projects by students in geological and mining engineering.
The mine has tours and exhibits of old mining equipment.

Military Museums of Fort Leonard Wood
Location: St. Robert
Distance from St. James: 37 milesI-44 exit 161A. Drive south on the I-44 extension for several miles to Fort Leonard Wood. Once past the Visitors Center, continue south on Missouri Ave., then bear left onto Constitution Ave. for 1.5 miles. When Constitution Ave. dead ends, turn left onto South Dakota Ave. The John B. Mahaffey Museum Complex will be on the left, between Illinois and Nebraska Aves.
